Music

"After all these years, time is still the enemy". With that single line, the purpose of “New Reality “is brought into brutal focus. After years in the wilderness, 50 Lions have returned. Leaner, harder, stronger and with a confidence and rage that only experience can bring.

Never a band to pull their punches, 50 lions have forged an album for the times. Hard times. From the frantic outset of "Cause & Effect” the impact is felt like a reality check that has been years in the making. “ from the street to the loading docks, the construction sites to the office blocks”. The rally cry for a generation of stagnation rings loud and clear. These are songs crafted for the here and now. Vital, visceral and violent.

From a sharpening of intent and vision the album paints a picture of modern life in the grind. This is an album weighing  heavily  in the harshness of life, death, sacrifice and social decay, the sound life pushed to breaking point. For the time 50 Lions have spent away, they have lost nothing in their ability to craft a sonic sledgehammer, whoever this album travels deep into new territory, and it’s in the new sounds that we find some of the best work the band has ever created. For all the muscle the band packed in its familiar prime, it’s the unexpected twists and turns of the sonic landscape that truly make this album hit hard. With the dynamic slowly seeping in as the album progresses, to the most anthemic and unique moment the band has created in  “A Thousand Cuts”, the writing is on the wall.  This is a “New Reality” and it belongs to 50 Lions.

Secret World deliver hearty, hardcore rock ‘n’ roll with an earnest charm. Comprised of friends who connected through the Sydney and Newcastle hardcore scenes, Secret World members played in other bands like SPEED, Trophy Eyes and Downside before forming the group in 2023; soon releasing their highly-praised EP Guilt Is Good in 2024, led by the anthemic single ‘Living Less’. Now, Secret World are on the verge of releasing their second EP Tomorrow Is A Mystery To Me.

Arriving on September 19 via Last Ride Records (AU/NZ), Sunday Drive Records (USA) and Ice Grills (JP), Tomorrow Is A Mystery To Me builds upon Secret World’s rock ‘n’ roll foundation with the urgency of hardcore punk and hook-laden choruses drawn from alt-rock sensibilities. While the EP is filled with emotive storytelling and extended anecdotes, it paints a clear picture of a band who are intent on seizing this moment, pushing forward with purpose, and giving it their absolute all.

Lead single ‘Good Faith’ features Sydney rock royalty Shogun (Royal Headache, Antenna) and fuses punchy and melodic vocals, leading into an infectious stadium-sized hook. Elsewhere, the ravaging ‘Repeat Offender’ is gritty and unapologetic; while the breezier riffs of ‘Everywhere Now’ trade aggression for reflection - a love letter to the hardcore scene and the friends they’ve lost along the way, blending grief with gratitude and everything in between.

Tomorrow Is A Mystery To Me was produced, recorded and mixed by Fletcher Matthews (Dear Seattle, Trophy Eyes) and mastered by Mike Kalajian at Rogue Planet (Quicksand, Saves The Day). Despite the clean sound, the EP still retains the energy of a sweat-drenched pub that’s packed to the brim, filled with sing-a-longs beside friends and strangers that you’ve just met. There’s no doubt that Secret World songs are made to be experienced live, with the band already selling out their own headline shows in Australia and playing alongside internationals like Basement, Drain and No Pressure.

Secret World are soon taking to the United States for the first time, touring alongside UK champions High Vis; and also playing at Furnace Fest with pioneers like Jimmy Eat World, Dropkick Murphys and Knocked Loose. Armed with a new EP and a raucous live show to boot, the band are charging into new territory - louder, sharper, and more sure of themselves than ever.

Since their inception in 2019, hardcore five-piece SPEED has evolved from a DIY Australian band to an undeniable global powerhouse. Their debut album ONLY ONE MODE was released in 2024; topping the charts, taking out awards, and catapulting the group into a non-stop touring schedule across the world. But in the midst of SPEED’s unprecedented success, tragedies struck.

SPEED’s latest project, ALL MY ANGELS, is a three-track EP that reflects on the passing of three close friends in recent years. Those events brought intense heartbreak to their community, but over time, they’ve magnified what SPEED have always held as their central ethos: To love unconditionally, without fear or regret.

In the years prior to ALL MY ANGELS, the band wrestled with their collective grief and life on the road. Moments of mourning took place on tour, in cramped vans driving through foreign countries; sandwiched between SPEED performances, on grandiose festival stages in front of 15,000 fans. While the band ticked off accolades and achievements - each more extraordinary than the last - the hurt lingered stubbornly.

On ALL MY ANGELS, that same collective grief has brought the five friends closer together; emboldening them to live life with greater clarity, and providing a more informed perspective on what’s really worth holding onto. Lyrics on the EP address the sobering realities of loss, and include musings on mortality - more vulnerable and raw than ever before. The title track ends with a direct statement of intent; “All my angels, I can’t give up.”

Musically, ALL MY ANGELS further explores what SPEED can contribute to modern hardcore beyond breakdowns and sing-a-longs. Influenced by forward-thinking New York hardcore legends like District 9, Crown of Thornz and Fahrenheit 451; the EP sees the band hitting deeper pockets of groove, experimenting with synths and samples, and delivering cathartic hooks that make it their most soul-baring effort.

More than ever, SPEED is a band that’s being guided by their lived experiences, from eye-opening triumphs to the most harrowing losses. In any case, they’ll continue to move forward with love and conviction.

Sydney’s hardcore titans, No Apologies, return with fervor and fire, unveiling their eagerly awaited second opus, "Life" — a visceral testament to the tumult, tenderness, and tenacity of the human spirit. Following their 2007 Australian hardcore landmark, "Survival", the band stands tall in career-defining form—a remarkable milestone for a group whose nearly two-decade legacy pulses with relentless energy.

Perhaps it’s the indelible bond between founding architects Pete Abordi and Peter Bursky, collaborators since the late '90s, or the razor-sharp cohesion shared with the rest of their core: Andres Hyde on drums, Chris Wilson on guitar, and Patrick Taylor on bass. Together, they forge Australia’s most formidable riff machine—Sumeru—an alchemical force with over ten years of unwavering collaboration and sonic mastery.

"Life" is more than mere sound—it's a journey through the depths of existence, a narrative woven with threads of mortality, acceptance, and resilience. A deeply personal confession rendered in thunderous riffs and haunting melodies, it recounts one man’s confrontation with mortality and another’s reconciliation with loss. The album is heightened by compelling guest appearances from Jem Siow (Speed) and Todd Jones (Nails, Carry On, Terror), infusing each track with added emotion and raw intensity.

Set for release on August 29 via Last Ride Records, "Life" emerges as a modern classic—a maelstrom of thrash-inflected, groove-heavy riffs, searing guitar solos, and dynamic elements that shatter traditional hardcore boundaries. No Apologies has always thrived on blending aggression with melody, chaos with clarity—this record continues that fearless tradition. It is a loud, unflinching reminder that in facing the music of our mortality, we find the raw truth of what it means to truly live.
