Remastered for vinyl by Lachy Pitcher at Depict Studios, and given the vinyl layout treatment by Thomas Sweetman. Each record features a gatefold cover and printed inner sleeve.

Canberra noisemakers Machina Genova will unleash their debut 10” in August. Weathered Heart will be released in a joint venture between Broken Hive Records and Lacklustre Records and will feature 6 tracks of chaotic and guttural metallic hardcore that’s sure to make waves with those who claim that music just isn’t what it used to be.

Recorded at Sun Distortion Studios in early 2013 with Chris Brownbill at the helm and mastered by Carl Saff (Paint It Black, Touche Amore, Code Orange Kids), Weathered Heart is the culmination of the efforts of the band over the last few years. Machina Genova have played hard in their hometown of Canberra as well as stretching out and playing in QLD, NSW and VIC alongside the likes of Antagonist AD, Loma Prieta, Expire and at Break The Ice 2013.

If you like your music with bite and emotion, Weathered Heart is what you need. Suffocating guttural chaos gives way to droning doom laden melody and over its 20 minute running time, you are transported to a world of dense layered sound.

Sydney’s Harbourer will release their debut self-titled 7” on Broken Hive Records this January. Having spent the last year playing their way up the ranks of Sydney’s punk and hardcore scene, Harbourer are now ready to drop their first release. Comprising of three songs of emotionally driven grunge and hardcore influenced melodic punk rock, the release was recorded in late 2013 at the Brain Studios in Sydney with Producer Clayton Segelov (Endless Heights, Perspectives) and demonstrates a huge aural step from their much loved 2012 demo.

Having just completed the Daylight Australian Tour this past November, Harbourer continue to mold their sound on the road, each of the quartet are seasoned musicians and their relatively short tenure as a band seems no issue as they tear through their songs live like they have played together for years. This raw emotion and precision has been captured on their self-titled 7”.

To catch everyone up: Australian hardcore band SPEED is putting their foot down on the world. For hardcore kids from Sydney, which is where SPEED’s from and what they represent, this is a first. Everyone in the band has been going to shows for years—”real moshers,” always up front, dancing. (The full lineup: Aaron Siow and brother Jem on bass and vocals, respectively, Josh Clayton and Dennis Vichidvongsa on guitars, Kane Vardon on drums.) During a lull period in their home scene—“there were no new bands going on”—the guys stepped up and tapped in. SPEED decided to start out hard and traditional—a high-level aesthetic decision that, every five years, an all-time hardcore band does. A reset. For their first year, the group referred to itself on flyers and in interviews, as two words—SPEED HARDCORE—to make things extra simple. This is what they’re about: Hardcore, played hard, played fast, “for us, by us”— explicit, immediate, definitive—hinting at all the crucial bands that have come before them.

Their new debut full length, ONLY ONE MODE, exemplifies their growth and distillation. It’s a concept album in one sense: a manual that explains, directly, SPEED’s beliefs, the five guys’ personalities, what they bring to the table, what’s special about their scene. Topics are sharp: “Real Life Love,” about the loyalty and realness they’ve learnt from hardcore, shows how SPEED connected through showing up; a depth of expression and emotion set against very punishing music. “The First Test” is full of dynamics—held notes, a tasteful flute break—and speaks on finding oneself as a marginalized individual—in Siow’s case, as an Asian-born Australian: striking out alone and growing in a beautiful and ugly world. “Kill Cap” displays real vulnerability—heartache, regret, spiritual themes, an homage to the friends and family lost to suicide. Lyrics on ONLY ONE MODE embrace perspectives, pore over big ideas and small detailed moments. About the tunes on the record: Harder than the single —more breakdowns, and longer ones; it’s heavy ‘90s metallic hardcore, in conversation with Hatebreed, Merauder, Biohazard. There are more groove parts; vocals are tough and emotive, there are none of the longer melodic parts that hardcore bands occasionally give in to when they rise to a popular level; all artistic decisions that are new for hardcore bands from Australia.

ONLY ONE MODE, like their previous records, is being released on Last Ride and Flatspot Records, their homes from the start. The album was produced by Elliott Gallart, Siow’s oldest high school friend; Jack Rudder, a longtime partner and collaborator, has directed all of SPEED’s music videos. The cover photo was taken by James Hartley, the prolific Australian hardcore photographer from the 2000s, when SPEED first started, as young hardcore kids, going to shows.

On Broken Sword, Rotten Shield, Full of Hell sharpen their blade with purpose. This latest EP is a blistering meditation on love, loss, and the crushing inevitability of grief. Through a fantasy-tinged lens, the band crafts a world of dog knights and noble quests, only to tear it all down in a violent reckoning with mortality. As vocalist Dylan Walker explains, these symbolic protectors—pure-hearted and loyal—stand in for the real-life companions we lose, and the void left behind when they’re gone.

Following the overwhelming acclaim of 2024’s Coagulated Bliss—named Decibel Magazine’s best grindcore record of the year—Full of Hell continue their creative streak with a record that’s both conceptually rich and sonically devastating. Produced by Kevin Bernstein (Misery Index, Pig Destroyer), Broken Sword, Rotten Shield balances suffocating heaviness with moments of bleak melody and reflection, reaching a thematic and emotional climax in the track, “Lament of All Things.”

The EP’s lead single and video, “Knight’s Oath,” captures the tragic beauty of unwavering devotion, portrayed through a surreal tale of anthropomorphic warriors driven by honor and grief. Meanwhile, the title track lays bare the record’s core idea: that in the face of time and death, all living things are rendered equal.

Out via Closed Casket Activities, Broken Sword, Rotten Shield arrives just ahead of a major North American tour with Harm’s Way, Kruelty, Jarhead Fertilizer, and Clique. It’s a record that expands Full of Hell’s world while digging deeper into what’s always driven them—confronting pain with absolute honesty, and turning it into something crushingly real.
