With a mission in mind, SPEED are setting out to put Australian hardcore on the map. The band's new EP, "GANG CALLED SPEED", will be out June 24th Last Ride Records (AUS) and Flatspot Records (USA). Recorded with Elliott Gallart at Chameleon Studios, the six songs on the EP are centered around recognizing who you are in this world, taking ownership of that identity and not letting anyone tell you otherwise. Lead single “NOT THAT NICE” captures the band’s no hold barred approach, highlighted by a blunt vocal delivery and intricate guitar work. The video for the song, filmed and edited by Jack Rudder, serves as a continuation of last year’s massive single “WE SEE U” representing the vibrant world of the Sydney hardcore scene. Each record also contains an etched b-side, featuring a band photo by Jonathan Tumbel.

To catch everyone up: Australian hardcore band SPEED is putting their foot down on the world. For hardcore kids from Sydney, which is where SPEED’s from and what they represent, this is a first. Everyone in the band has been going to shows for years—”real moshers,” always up front, dancing. (The full lineup: Aaron Siow and brother Jem on bass and vocals, respectively, Josh Clayton and Dennis Vichidvongsa on guitars, Kane Vardon on drums.) During a lull period in their home scene—“there were no new bands going on”—the guys stepped up and tapped in. SPEED decided to start out hard and traditional—a high-level aesthetic decision that, every five years, an all-time hardcore band does. A reset. For their first year, the group referred to itself on flyers and in interviews, as two words—SPEED HARDCORE—to make things extra simple. This is what they’re about: Hardcore, played hard, played fast, “for us, by us”— explicit, immediate, definitive—hinting at all the crucial bands that have come before them.

Their new debut full length, ONLY ONE MODE, exemplifies their growth and distillation. It’s a concept album in one sense: a manual that explains, directly, SPEED’s beliefs, the five guys’ personalities, what they bring to the table, what’s special about their scene. Topics are sharp: “Real Life Love,” about the loyalty and realness they’ve learnt from hardcore, shows how SPEED connected through showing up; a depth of expression and emotion set against very punishing music. “The First Test” is full of dynamics—held notes, a tasteful flute break—and speaks on finding oneself as a marginalized individual—in Siow’s case, as an Asian-born Australian: striking out alone and growing in a beautiful and ugly world. “Kill Cap” displays real vulnerability—heartache, regret, spiritual themes, an homage to the friends and family lost to suicide. Lyrics on ONLY ONE MODE embrace perspectives, pore over big ideas and small detailed moments. About the tunes on the record: Harder than the single —more breakdowns, and longer ones; it’s heavy ‘90s metallic hardcore, in conversation with Hatebreed, Merauder, Biohazard. There are more groove parts; vocals are tough and emotive, there are none of the longer melodic parts that hardcore bands occasionally give in to when they rise to a popular level; all artistic decisions that are new for hardcore bands from Australia.

ONLY ONE MODE, like their previous records, is being released on Last Ride and Flatspot Records, their homes from the start. The album was produced by Elliott Gallart, Siow’s oldest high school friend; Jack Rudder, a longtime partner and collaborator, has directed all of SPEED’s music videos. The cover photo was taken by James Hartley, the prolific Australian hardcore photographer from the 2000s, when SPEED first started, as young hardcore kids, going to shows.

Breaking onto the hardcore scene in 2013, New York’s Regulate have shown a resilient and earnest approach in everything they do. This rings true on the band’s self-titled LP. The ten tracks on the album developed organically throughout the brunt of the pandemic, inspiring vocalist Sebastian Paba’s most personal lyrics to the date.

Regulate has always been an outlet for vulnerability -the band’s latest album "In the Promise of Another Tomorrow" (2018) shined with commentary on identity and power structure complimented by explosive musicianship. "Regulate" takes the band to another level, teetering between a traditional hardcore sound and something more striking, pulling additional inspiration from Latin music and R&B. Paba effortlessly handles both screams and what might be the catchiest clean vocal delivery in the entire genre while pushing forth thoughts on serious topics like genocide against indigenous peoples and more light-hearted notes of just loving making music. Heading into a new album cycle, ambitions are high for Regulate, but they don’t mind leaving a few things up to interpretation.

First it was hell is empty, and now all the devils are here. The team is back together for this one, once again recorded, mixed and mastered by Elliott Gallart at Chameleon Studios, with artwork by Thomas Sweetman.

CANDY return with their new album, It's Inside You. A brazen take on hardcore, metal, and disparate electronics and experimental soundscapes, It's Inside You sees CANDY take another step forward with a compelling, extreme, and one-of-a-kind take on the genre.

From the frenzied album opener "eXisTenZ", CANDY's intent is clear; It's Inside You kicks off as violently as possible. Cited as thriving in "this jumble of gothic industrial and digitized metal" by Pitchfork, the single minute, thirty-second track twists and turns as a contorted thesis statement for what will follow. Tracks like "Dehumanize Me" continue this trend, establishing an interplay between ferocious hardcore stomps helmed by guitarist Michael Quick, with pulse-pounding, electronic rhythms set against this monstrous riffing. "Dreams Less Sweet" crashes and bashes onto the record, while vocalist Zachary Quiram mourns the modern condition: "dreams laid dead/stuck grieving/how do you fight the feeling?/are we living in a world just to die?"

Elsewhere on the record, tracks like "Love Like Snow" showcase a different side of the band. Electronic, mechanical melodies are set against desperate cries for human connection. It's Inside You flexes more than just muscular Hardcore brutality. "Dancing to the Infinite Beat" and "Hypercore" also see raw emotion laid bare against frenetic, electronic punishment before crescendoing into cathartic, ear-worm choruses.

Melbourne, Australia based five piece AWOL are creating hardcore for hardcore’s sake - staking their claim in the genre with their debut album Tear ‘Em To Bits, due out April 26th on Last Ride Records and Flatspot Records. Following 2021’s AWOL EP, the nine songs on Tear ‘Em To Bits build on the band’s monstrous sound, filled with gruff vocals, groove-driven riffs, and meaty breakdowns.

AWOL hit the recording studio in Melbourne over the course of 2023, where the band captured their love of classic hardcore in its purest form on the upcoming Tear ‘Em To Bits. Drawing from bands like Madball and Biohazard, AWOL pack an intense aggression across the record. The lyrics are punishing, covering everything from deception and failed relationships to addressing drug addiction and police brutality.

With Tear ‘Em To Bits, proves that AWOL has earned a seat at the table as one of the most compelling new bands in the genre they love. As the band simply states: “The only goal was to make a good hardcore record that we were proud of and that our friends could get behind.”

2024 will be the year that sees Trail of Lies at its most aggressive and erudite. Only the Strong, the title of their forthcoming sophomore full- length record, as well as their revitalized mantra, will see the band occupy a space all their own. A prioritization of feeling over technicality, the band's newest LP serves as a reminder and a lesson to all, as to just who they have always been as a musical tribe.

The hardcore quintet, forged in Syracuse, New York, has doubled down on its mission to write music that speaks to the primal rage, disgust, and disillusion, we all feel today. Trail of Lies has always, but even more so on this newest creative offering, tapped into the twisted ideals and behaviors that serve as the perverse benchmark for our modern world: obsession with fast and gluttonous consumerism, erosion of human empathy, and a widespread cultural embrace of conflict avoidance. The guttural cries of "only the strong survive" from vocalist Tom Damiano in the title track, is not a celebration of physical domination over the weak, but a reimagining of what it means to really be strong. Only the Strong, is a record that will sonically challenge and remind listeners both new and old that, "the pain you feel today will be the strength that you feel tomorrow."

An invitation to reconnect and redefine the word strength, Trail of Lies intends to spread Only the Strong's mission, message, and mantra around the world in 2024 and beyond. "Will you fight or will you fall?"

Long awaited debut LP from Newcastle hardcore mainstays Downside. Close to a decade in the making, "Dark Patterns & Intrusive Thoughts" takes pieces from the existing Downside puzzle, while also expanding and pushing toward new ground. "Hell Is Empty" is the new four track 7” from Sydney hardcore's Phantoms, their first new music in 10 years. What started as the band jamming again for a one-off show to celebrate 10 years of their 2010 LP, "As Above So Below", was derailed by Covid into this new release on Last Ride Records. Recorded with Elliott Gallart at Chameleon Studios, "Hell Is Empty" continues Phantoms’ spin on the NYHC crossover style in the vein of Merauder and Ringworm, just with more pop music samples. The band reckon "Still Grim" is the best song they’ve done, let ‘em know if they’re right.

One side of LRR01 returns once again for LRR40. The Others are back with a new 7" "Dive Into My World".
