Citizen's 'As You Please' reports from ground zero of an epidemic. Two years removed from their previous LP, 'Everybody Is Going To Heaven,' Citizen's perspective is far less sublime.

'As You Please' is a confrontational record, incapable of turning a blind eye toward the inescapable strife. And so, songwriter Mat Kerekes pursues the source of discontent that is ravaging his Rust Belt city of Toledo, Ohio with the band's most dynamic record to date.

Just a few years after self-recording their debut album between college classes, Philadelphia's Modern Baseball will show the world a brand new version of themselves on their third full-length album, 'Holy Ghost.'

Thematically, the record is a time-capsule for the two years since the release of their Run For Cover debut 'You're Gonna Miss It All,' curated in two parts by the band's guitarists and main songwriters, Jacob Ewald and Brendan Lukens.

Splitting the record into two halves, both take the helm to curate the sonic journey into territory both familiar and foreign in the band's discography. Whether it be on the homesick tour ballad "Mass" or the heartbreaking, question-filled lyrics on "Apple Cider, I Don't Mind," it becomes clear that 'Holy Ghost' is a certainly transformative record for a band maturing into greatness.

Front man Austin Getz doesn’t blink when asked to sum up Turnover’s third full-length, Good Nature. “Learning,” he replies. “This whole record is about learning. Opening your eyes to new things, going outside of your comfort zone, and learning to grow into something new.”

The album’s unique blend of musical and spiritual growth is immediately audible on the opening track, “Super Natural,” a late-summer idyll of intertwined guitar parts and laidback vocals. Listening to how the leisurely “Nightlight Girl” melts into a more propulsive selection like “Breeze,” and the way Good Nature flows together as a seamless whole, it’s also evident that the foursome has been paying closer attention to how artists from earlier eras made full-length albums: the range of textures, tempos, and dynamics on Good Nature are infuenced in part by bossa nova, cool jazz, electronic music, and psychedelic grooves. This infux of new infuences and inspiration, navigated by Peripheral Vision producer Will Yip, results in the band’s best album to date. Good Nature comes from a place of calm and contentment, nurtured by looking inward.

Almost two years to the date of the release of their breakthrough album, Citizen return with their highly anticipated follow-up full-length, 'Everybody is Going to Heaven.' Haunting these ten songs is a foreboding, dark atmosphere masterfully crafted by producer Will Yip, and an immediate, intense energy is palpable from even the first grimy seconds of the opener, "Cement."

As with every one of Citizen's releases, Mat Kerekes' signature vocal delivery here is a trademark feature, demonstrating the emotional tension that boils over on this release. As cathartic as ever, he duels between a soft croon and a haunting scream, confronting his demons on tracks like "Stain" echoing the tormented refrain, "my heart still beats for nothing." And while most of the record is an intense and noisy onslaught, songs like "Heaviside" and "Yellow Love" act as armistices, each aching in reverb-drenched consonance.

'Everybody is Going to Heaven' is a turning point for Citizen: once regarded as newcomers with undeniable potential, the band shows here that they have matured both abruptly and uniquely, with no end to their upward trajectory in sight.

The bittersweet "No Reply" reckons with guilt over failing to be present with a loved one, while the effervescent "Much After Feeling" recognizes the sacrifices we make to stay connected across geographical distance, and the breezy "Parties" grapples with the kind of self-consciousness that can leave us prisoners of our own design.

Malevolence fans will know that their records come few and far between.
