“After all these years, time is still the enemy“. With that single line, the purpose of “New Reality “is brought into brutal focus. After years in the wilderness, 50 Lions have returned. Leaner, harder, stronger and with a confidence and rage that only experience can bring. 

Never a band to pull their punches, 50 lions have forged an album for the times. Hard times. From the frantic outset of "Cause & Effect” the impact is felt like a reality check that has been years in the making. “ from the street to the loading docks, the construction sites to the office blocks”. The rally cry for a generation of stagnation rings loud and clear. These are songs crafted for the here and now. Vital, visceral and violent.

From a sharpening of intent and vision the album paints a picture of modern life in the grind. This is an album weighing  heavily  in the harshness of life, death, sacrifice and social decay, the sound life pushed to breaking point. For the time 50 Lions have spent away, they have lost nothing in their ability to craft a sonic sledgehammer, whoever this album travels deep into new territory, and it’s in the new sounds that we find some of the best work the band has ever created. For all the muscle the band packed in its familiar prime, it’s the unexpected twists and turns of the sonic landscape that truly make this album hit hard. With the dynamic slowly seeping in as the album progresses, to the most anthemic and unique moment the band has created in  “A Thousand Cuts”, the writing is on the wall. Age of Apocalypse materialize at a shadowy crossroads between metal, grunge and hardcore. The Hudson Valley, NY quintet—Dylan Kaplowitz [vocals], Jack Xiques [guitar], Terry Orlando [guitar], Joe Shannon [bass], and Will Kamerman [drums]—steep anthems of darkness, depression, and loss into a disarmingly infectious and downright inimitable hybrid of their own. After receiving acclaim from Stereogum, CVLT NATION, No Echo, and more, the group present a fascinating and fiery vision on their sophomore full-length and debut for Closed Casket Activities, Grim Wisdom.

Initially formed during 2018 after Jack and Dylan previously played in another project. Inspired by an unholy alliance of All Out War, Alice In Chains, Type O Negative, and Life Of Agony, they unveiled The Way in 2020. 2021 saw them team up with “Pain of Truth” for a four-song split. In its wake, Stereogum hailed Age of Apocalypse’s “furious thrashers with big, melodically howled lead vocals and crushing breakdowns.” Throughout 2021, they recorded Grim Wisdom with producer Taylor Young of The Pit Recording Studio. Drums were tracked GCR Studios in Buffalo, NY, followed by the band working out of Jack's studio in Western Massachusetts, while Taylor produced remotely from California and later mixed the release. Mastering handled by Brad Boatright of Audiosiege and original artwork created by Dillon Perino.

Formed in Savannah, Georgia from the remains of metallic hardcore band Vatican, AGONIZE represents a return to rawness that hardcore demands. Their latest EP, Highest Form releasing through Closed Casket Activities, eschews the over-production dominating modern metal in favor of capturing the visceral energy of a band wanting to tear a room apart performing right in front of your eyes. 

Produced by Jeremy Martin, AGONIZE tracked their latest offering with an emphasis on preserving the human element, deliberately avoiding click tracks and excessive editing to maintain the natural grit that defines their sound. Highest Form showcases the band's ability to craft memorable metal-influenced hardcore while maintaining a deliberately ugly, unrefined aesthetic that harkens back to the genre's roots.

Drawing inspiration from the likes of Meshuggah, Pantera, and Terror, AGONIZE crafts songs that balance technical prowess with deliberate restraint, avoiding the trap of overcomplicated riffs that lose sight of their core impact. Songs like opener “STRANGE REFLECTION” incorporates big metal riffing with rhythm that undeniably belongs to hardcore. Closing track “IN THE VACANT LOT”  hints at future creative directions, incorporating atmospheric elements that expand their sonic palette without compromising their fundamental heaviness.

Beyond the music, AGONIZE extends their creative vision through DIY-filmed music videos shot on vintage equipment, producing horror-influenced visuals that feel like something the viewer shouldn’t be watching. Each member brings creative influences from outside the music world into Agonize's visual aesthetic, incorporating elements from horror films, video games, and graphic art, while vocalist Spencer Guerrero's work as a tattoo artist directly shapes the band's distinctive imagery and album artwork. This holistic approach to their art reflects the band's commitment to crafting an authentic representation of their hometown Savannah, showcasing the Southern Darkness that lives beneath its picturesque surface.

AGONIZE’s vision is squarely set on making hardcore musically and visually as dangerous as possible. With a heavy slate of shows already announced, AGONIZE’s 2025 is just beginning.

For something to be “ecstatic,” the feelings and emotions it evokes must transcend what we tend to experience most regularly in our lives. Ecstatic joy isn’t just happiness; it’s a feeling of jubilation which impacts us emotionally and in a metaphysical, arguably spiritual sense too. Although it has long been associated with connotations of the dark and macabre, extreme music has the ability to be a powerful mode of expression for these feelings of absolute bliss, overwhelming love, and awe-inspiring sublimity. Extreme emotions no less and those which black metal quartet Agriculture evokes with its ecstatic subversion of the subgenre’s tropes. 

What was initially a meeting and subsequent series of jam sessions between Kern Haug and Daniel Meyer, two musicians in the Los Angeles underground noise scene, would eventually manifest as a shared vision to portray the sublimity of the human experience through the vehicle of heavy music. Following the additions of veteran guitarist Richard Chowenhill and bassist/vocalist Leah Levinson to the band’s lineup, this idea would crystalize into the “ecstatic black metal” backbone of Agriculture’s music, first heard on the band’s 2022 debut EP, The Circle Chant.

With Agriculture’s self-titled record and first full-length LP, it’s abundantly clear that the band’s use of heavy music to showcase the most resplendent emotions and moments of the human experience has a far deeper meaning. Woven between the flurries of soaring tremolo picking, crescendoing guitar harmonies, celebratory screamed vocals, thoughtful improvisation, and meditative atmospheric passages is the record’s mission statement to experience the wonders and joys of both the esoteric and physical world. Across its runtime, The Spiritual Sound traces a narrative arc through extremes: searing, sky-cracking catharsis on side A; a slow-burning, devotional undercurrent on side B. The album is largely a fusing of the visions of its two principal songwriters, Dan Meyer and Leah Levinson: distinct voices, deeply complementary.

Dan writes like someone clawing toward the divine through noise, channeling Zen Buddhism, historical collapse, ecstatic grief. Leah’s songs move differently: grounded in queer history and AIDS-era literature, amid the suffocating fog of the present, they carry the weight of survival as daily ritual. Her writing asks how to honor queer community and collective struggle without turning it into identity branding or personal mythmaking: how to stay honest, how to stay present. Though distinct, their voices converge in a singular spiritual grammar—one that defines the totality of The Spiritual Sound, not as separate parts, but as one unified expression.

Agriculture’s formation mirrors this duality. What began as a loose collaboration between Kern Haug and Dan Meyer in the Los Angeles noise scene evolved into a shared pursuit of the sublime through heavy music. Finally, with Richard producing, the final form of each song is realized through intense collaborative work in the studio. Although a time consuming and ego-frustrating process, this allows the band to find the spirit of the songs not through inspiration, but through persistence.

Yet, even in its most ambitious moments, The Spiritual Sound remains rooted in the ordinary and in the day-to-day relationships between the people who made it. Gas station snacks. Inside jokes. Sleeping on floors. Playing shows in rooms that smell like mildew. The spirit here isn’t abstract, it's live. This is spiritual music that starts with imperfect gear and a long-in-the-tooth tour van.

Agriculture doesn’t offer salvation. The Spiritual Sound isn’t a map out of the fire. What it offers instead is presence: a confrontation with the moment, however unbearable, however divine. It insists that meaning is still possible, even in a world hell-bent on reducing everything to content, and where suffering itself can be conducive to recovery. As the Buddhist saying goes “the only way out is in.”

When the founder of Chinese Zen, Bodhidharma, was asked by the emperor of China “What is the true meaning of the holy truth?” He replied, “Vast emptiness. Nothing holy.” This is not background music. This is not for vibe.
